Dear UKRAINETT members, friends of UKRAINETT and all interested in Ukraine and research on Ukraine,

Welcome to the ninth edition of UKRAINETT News! In this issue, we share the latest updates, upcoming events, and new developments from across our network.

On 11–12 November 2026, the next annual UKRAINETT+ conference will be held at Oslo Metropolitan University. The programme will include keynote speakers Oleksii Haran, Olga Onuch, and Yulia Yurchuk, as well as several expert panel participants. Following the conference, Nord University Business School will host the workshop “Futures of the Norwegian–Ukrainian Cooperation: Year 2036” at OsloMet on 12–13 November.

In this newsletter, we encourage you to check out ongoing projects that have received funding from the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) through Nansen EDU, a Norwegian–Ukrainian collaboration in higher education.

We are pleased to present a new episode of the podcast created by the Dnipro-based Sociological Company “Operatyvna sotsiolohiia,” this time on how the war has changed the labour market in Ukraine. The latest Ukrainian-language newsletter, prepared by Olena Muradyan, Dean of the Faculty of Sociology at Karazin Kharkiv University, provides updates on the activities of Ukrainian research institutions participating in the UKRAINETT+ project.

As always, we also share updates on upcoming events and highlights from past events, including available online recordings.

UKRAINETT + CONFERENCE

The annual UKRAINETT+ conference, titled “State and Society Under Pressure: Internal and External Dynamics,” will be hosted by OsloMet on 11–12 November 2026. The call for abstracts is now closed. We received many submissions and will assess all abstracts before 6 July. We look forward to confirming the programme soon, further updates will follow.

NANSEN EDU 2025

HK-dir has awarded funding to 16 three-year projects. The call is part of Nansen EDU, a Norwegian–Ukrainian collaboration in higher education. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs funds the scheme as part of the Nansen Programme for Ukraine and supports the Ukraine Recovery Plan within education and research.

UKRAINETT SURVEY

Ahead of Easter 2026, UKRAINETT conducted a survey among its members to gain insights into how the network is perceived and how its activities can be further developed. The survey results provide valuable input for the continued planning of content and coordination.

UKRAINETT+ NEWS IN UKRAINIAN

UKRAINETT+ PODCAST

As part of the UKRAINETT+ project, we are pleased to present a new podcast episode in Ukrainian, created by the Dnipro-based Sociological Company “Operatyvna sotsiolohiia”. This time, the focus is on how the war has changed the labour market in Ukraine. The discussion features Ivan Sokolovskyi, from the Institute of Sociology at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

UKRAINETT+ NEWSLETTER

We present our eight newsletter in Ukrainian, prepared by Olena Muradyan, Dean of the Faculty of Sociology at Karazin Kharkiv University, and coordinator of the Ukrainian network branch. The newsletter provides information on activities at Ukrainian research institutions that comprise the UKRAINETT+ project branch in Ukraine.

NORKOM CONFERENCE 2026

The Nordic Conference on Local Government Research 2026 will be hosted by the Unit for Public Administration and Governance at Oslo Business School, OsloMet, on 26–27 November 2026. The conference will include a plenary session focusing on Ukraine, and there will also be a dedicated workshop on Ukraine. Formal registration will open in early autumn.

TURBO FINAL CONFERENCE

The conference titled “Higher Education in Ukraine After the Crisis: Main Lessons Learned” will take place on 19–20 October 2026 at West Ukrainian National University in Ternopil. It will bring together participants to discuss wartime challenges in higher education, innovative learning programmes, digital transformation, and the role of universities in Ukraine’s recovery. More information will be published on the project website in due course.

CHALLENGES WITH ORGANIZING POST-WAR ELECTIONS IN UKRAINE

This breakfast seminar, co-organized by the NUPI Ukraine Centre at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), International IDEA, and UKRAINETT, was held on 6 May to provide a space for informed discussion on the legal, operational, security, and societal dimensions of post-war electoral preparedness in Ukraine.

RUSSIAN TREATMENT OF UKRAINIAN PRISONERS OF WAR

Russian forces’ treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war, documented by the UN and human rights groups, reveals violations of international law and potential war crimes. UKRAINETT addressed the issue in a seminar on 28 May with Ane Tusvik Bonde (Amnesty International), Tor Bukkvoll (FFI), and Kristian Åtland (FFI).

POPULAR OPINION AND OPINION POLLING IN UKRAINE AND RUSSIA

On 4 June, the Ukraine Program and the Full Spectrum Threats program at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS) invited participants to a breakfast seminar examining public opinion and survey data in both Ukraine and Russia. The speakers were Tymofii Brik (KSE) and Kirill Rogov (Re: Russia), with moderation by Guri Tyldum (Fafo).

DEMOCRACY UNDER WAR AND RECONSTRUCTION

The project "Democracy under War and Reconstruction: A Theoretical Framework for Democratic Resilience in Ukraine" brings together researchers from OsloMet to examine how democratic institutions and practices are maintained, challenged and transformed during war and post-war reconstruction.

REMINDERS

FIFTH ROUND OF UKRAINETT+ SEED FUNDING

The UKRAINETT+ project has allocated funds to stimulate research project development and cooperation involving Norwegian and Ukrainian researchers and institutions. The most recent deadline was 1 May 2026; applicants will be notified of the outcome before 1 July.

The next deadline is 1 November 2026. A Norwegian institution must be the applicant and project coordinator. At least two institutions should be involved in the collaboration, and both Ukrainian and Norwegian institutions must be represented. Funding may cover travel, seminars and other activities related to network-building and project development.
