UKRAINETT NEWS

This is the third issue of UKRAINETT news. For our Ukrainian speaking audience, we are happy to present two podcasts about the Nansen program made by our UKRAINETT+ partners at Operatyvna sotsiolohiia. For our English speaking audience, we have an event coming up on 17 December where Håvard Bækken, senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies and Olha Pashkova, senior researcher at the National Defence University of Ukraine will speak about military patriotism and Russian influence in occupied parts of Ukraine. On 10 January UKRAINETT member Tamta Gelashvili will defend her dissertation “Far-right mobilization in hybrid regimes: Explaining patterns of protest in Georgia and Ukraine” at the University of Oslo. CULTURAL HERITAGE AT WAR

The war in Ukraine and in Gaza are quite different, yet both involve significant civilian suffering and highlight the role of cultural heritage as both a weapon and a force of resistance. Josephine Munch Rasmussen and Håkon Roland will discuss this topic on 12 December as part of the Oslo Peace Days.

DISPUTATION TAMTA GELASHVILI

UKRAINETT member Tamta Gelashvili will defend her dissertation, "Far-right Mobilization in Hybrid Regimes: Explaining Patterns of Protest in Georgia and Ukraine," at the Department of Political Science at the University of Oslo. The trial lecture and disputation will take place on 10 January.

Russia's war of aggression has persisted for nearly three years. The West supports democracy and resistance, but how do Ukrainians perceive the relationship between vocal support and tangible actions? DISPUTATION ARMINE BAGIYAN

UKRAINETT member Armine Bagiyan successfully defended her PhD dissertation titled "Critical Juncture Events and Public Spaces: A Comparative Analysis of Yerevan and Kyiv" at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo.

NEXT UKRAINETT+ CONFERENCE

The next UKRAINETT+ conference, titled "The War and Beyond: Building Knowledge on Ukrainian Culture and Society", will be hosted by the University of Bergen on 14 – 15 October 2025.

UKRAINETT+ SEED FUNDING: NEXT DEADLINE

The Ukrainett+ project (2024–2026) has allocated funds to stimulate research project development and cooperation involving Norwegian and Ukrainian researchers and institutions. The next deadline will be 1st May 2025.

At least two institutions should be involved in the collaboration, and both Ukrainian and Norwegian institutions must be represented. Funding may cover travel, seminars and other activities related to network-building and project development. The activities to be funded should include concrete plans for applications to external funding sources. The research topic should be related to Ukraine/Ukrainian Studies.
